Are Acai bowls really THAT healthy?

on August 03, 2020

Acai bowls have been the go-to healthy dessert for some time, with there being massive fanfare over it. There is good reason for this, as Acai bowls are packed with antioxidants, fibre and micronutrients. However, store sold Acai bowls might be high in sugar, as they very often use artificial sweeteners. Hence begs the question- Are Acai bowls really all that healthy?

Sugar

The Acai bowl’s main ingredient is the Acai berry, a fruit originating from South American rainforests. It is blended into a puree, which forms the base of the Acai bowl. While it is rich in vitamins and nutrients(Read more about it’s health benefits in our previous article “Why you should eat Acai berries”), it is relatively low in sugar, with only 2-3 grams of sugar per serving[1]. The natural Acai berry taste is fairly bitter, thereby meaning it has to be sweetened artificially. Popular toppings used are honey, sweetened almond milk and other fruits. While fruits contain natural sugar, which is a healthier choice, the same cannot be said about Acai berry powder which contain artificial sugars. Acai stores that are simply interested in attracting the crowd may use these artificial sweeteners to make their Acai bowls tastier. Thus, it is very important to know what toppings are used before purchasing an Acai bowl.

An average Acai bowl contains 50 grams of sugar[2]. That would mean more sugar than a can of Coke. We hear so much negative comments about Coke’s effect on our health, and yet, the Acai bowl is known to be healthy. Ironic much?
As a general guideline, the amount of sugar per serving shouldn’t exceed 10 grams[3]. Anything more than that is what we call a “sugar bomb”, and completely debunks the myth of it as a health food.

DIY Acai bowl

Hence, we suggest making your own Acai bowl! It might be more time consuming than purchasing it from a store, but it will definitely be a healthier choice. Here is a recipe we believe is not only tasty, but healthy as well.

Classic Acai Bowl recipe[4]

Ingredients

  • 2 frozen bananas
  • 1 cup frozen acai berries
  • 1 cup full-fat milk
  • 2 tablespoons yogurt
  • ½ cup blueberries
  • ¼ cup blackberries
  • 1 teaspoon pepita
  • 1 teaspoon melon seeds
  • 1 teaspoon chia seeds
  • Mint leaves for garnish

How To Prepare

  1. Toss one frozen banana, milk, acai berry, and yogurt into a blender.
  2. Blitz it.
  3. Transfer it to two bowls and top it with sliced banana, berries, pepita, melon seeds, and chia seeds.
  4. Garnish with mint leaves before serving.

Conclusion

The term “superfoods” have been thrown around quite loosely, and it is important we do our research before consuming them. Acai bowls sold in stores are generally high in sugar, and shouldn’t be indulged in. We hope that the recipe we gave to you will satisfy your cravings and keep you healthy!
